Default Diet-soda and esophageal cancer risk!

Oh dear, oh dear! *hand wringing* Drinking diet soda... lowers your risk.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/14/health/14real.html

Quote:
The latest study, published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute and conducted by a team at Yale, looked at the diets and levels of soda consumption among nearly 2,000 people in four states.

About half had esophageal cancer. Instead of finding that soda might somehow contribute to the development of the disease, the researchers found the opposite. People who drank the most diet soda had only half the risk of developing esophageal cancer as those who avoided it.

But the researchers said it was unlikely that diet soda had any protective effects: people who prefer diet beverages are probably more health conscious in general than their peers.

half had cancer, which is half the risk of those who didn't drink diet soda? this means that everyone who doesn't drink diet soda gets esophageal cancer? yikes!

People who drink diet soda obviously eat a low fat diet -- that must be it.
