I have DANDR 1999 edition .. and the topic is covered in the Q&A section. I'm sure there is similar discussion in his 2002 book ... you could look it up in the index. Basically ... caffeine mimics the effects of glucose in the blood, and can trigger an insulin response.

There are people out there who drink coffee with no problems at all. I gave it up when I started the program so I don't what effects if any is has on the eating style. I think that the coffee issue is an individual thing.

triggering an insullin response is a rise in your blood sugar and one of the benefits on eating low carb is lowering and leveling out your blood sugar levels.

For you to know how it specifically effects you check your blood sugar before and then every 15 minutes after you finish a cup of coffee for a couple of hours.

You can do the same things with foods but for that I usually check an hour after a meal and then two if I'm not sure how I would respond or if I don't feel well after eating.

Can I check my response to drinking coffee using ketostix? What I mean is, do ketones in your urine indicate that your body is in a low blood sugar state? I'm looking for an alternative for testing my blood -- I am not diabetic and don't have blood sugar testing supplies.
