Yes, in DANDR (the most recent version), he does mention subtracting fiber from the total carb count to get the effective carb count, or ECC. Your body can't digest fiber, but by law it must be included in the total carb count, at least in the United States. Things like glycerin and sugar alcohols are another matter altogether. For some people they have no effect and can be subtracted from the total carb count, many others are not so lucky and are affected by them. The only way to tell which group you fall into is to try them and see how they affect you. I would advise you to stay away from artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols at least during induction and only experiment with them after you are done with induction and into the ongoing weight loss phase. The new version of Dr. Atkins' book has a lot more information in it than the old one and would be well worth picking up a copy. Happy low carbing!
