Question Net Carb Question

It's been a while, but I read Atkin's Diet Revolution. Recently moved and the book's been in a box and I dont know which one - but I do not remember reading anything about Net Carbs. However, this term keeps popping up.

I have no clue how I'd recognize good carb / bad carb. Is there more info on this in the NEW Diet Revolution book?

And about the Low-carb bars. It sounds great - only 2.5 carbs per bar - but it just doesn't feel right - there are about 14 carbs (varies by brand) in there that we can just ignore??? I get the "too good to be true" feeling.

Hi Thelma!

Yes, in DANDR (the most recent version), he does mention subtracting fiber from the total carb count to get the effective carb count, or ECC. Your body can't digest fiber, but by law it must be included in the total carb count, at least in the United States. Things like glycerin and sugar alcohols are another matter altogether. For some people they have no effect and can be subtracted from the total carb count, many others are not so lucky and are affected by them. The only way to tell which group you fall into is to try them and see how they affect you. I would advise you to stay away from artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols at least during induction and only experiment with them after you are done with induction and into the ongoing weight loss phase. The new version of Dr. Atkins' book has a lot more information in it than the old one and would be well worth picking up a copy. Happy low carbing!

Thanks for the info - I'll pick up a copy.

While we're at it - I had ordered the Atkins tapes via Shop America from the infomercial. A $70 value but right now only $30 (plus $11.95 shipping and handling but with free ketone sticks.....) Mainly, I bought it for motivation but did expect something useful in there. Forget it - is was just a more detailed infomertial.

I sent them back and did get my money back pretty quick, so.
