I have seen this ingredient in some stuff I am eating. Does anybody know what it is, what it does to us, good, bad, and so on...??

Thanks.

Well, it is a derivative from fats and can be manufactured from plants, animal fat or petroleum......it's used as preservative or/and sweetener in foods but contains no sugar. I've never heard it's bad for us in small amounts but of course I don't know.
Alfred Nobel used it to manufacture dynamite......now that is bad for us, no doubt about it....

I see you've lost weight.........congratulations!

Hi Alina,

Thanks. I believe Nobel used NitroGlycerine, which I hope is different from the stuff in my sugar-free popcicles. Yes, I am losing, slow and steady.

Oh yeah, I just remembered; isn't "Glycerine" also a song by Bush? I believe they use it for fake tears in movies/TV as well.

Correct, but the substance came from glycerine. Popsicles should be safe but don't toss them around.......you never know!

Alina,

I am afraid your warning was a little too late. I winged a grape popcicle at the television and there was a horrific explosion. No more glycerine for me.

Why didn't you say...'no more tv'? What were you watching? The Academy Awards? Their excessive use of glycerine must have triggered the chain reaction.

Michael,

Oh, so sorry.......meant to say Jerry Springer Show. Major contributor to Nobel Foundation or was it the other way around?

I don't trust the food industry anyway, I bet they just cross 'nitro' over.
Lucky me I didn't even know what a popsicle was, had to check it out. We are way behind in Europe.........

See you

Alina

Thanks.

Glycerine molecules are attached to fatty acid molecules to form triglycerides. But on its own it's not a fat, and although it tastes sweet, it's not technically a carbohydrate either.

Because it's not a carbohydrate, it doesn't cause a rise in insulin when consumed. Glycerine has more calories than carbs though, 4.3 per gram.

It's mostly used in protein and sports nutrition bars to keep them soft and moist. Some other sweetener is usually added, such as sucralose (Splenda). In your popsicle, it's most likely used as a texturizer, to keep it from crystalizing.

hth,

Doreen

Be warned. Many people have a definite glycemic reaction (blood sugar rise) from glycerine. That is why ALOT of people stall out on weight loss when consuming low carb bars (they almost all contain glycerine to keep them moist, shaped well, and sweet).

This is one of those "your mileage may vary" things. For me, I have a definite reaction to it and I avoid glycerine in products if I am trying to lose weight. A little bit is okay if I am just maintaining.

I have read in several places that sweet tasting foods can cause glycemic reactions in some people even if the foods contain no sugars (i.e. glycerin, Splenda, saccharin, etc.) It's kind of like Pavlov conditioning the dog to salivate at the ringing of a bell. Your mouth tastes the sweetness, and BOOM the physical reaction occurs due to the association.
