Thumbs down Ingredients in Atkins Wraps

Hi Everyone,

With all the talk (and controversy) about Subway's Atkins wraps lately, I figured I'd take a closer look at what was in them. I haven't seen them posted here, but I apologize if this has already been done. For both the U.S and Canadian versions:

ATKINS-FRIENDLY WRAP Water, Wheat Gluten, Corn Starch, Whole Wheat Flour, Oat Fiber, Isolated Soy Protein, Soy Flour, Soy Oil, Salt, Sesame Flour, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Dextrose, Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Propionate (A Preservative), Fumaric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Mono -Diglycerides, Sucralose, L. Cysteine.

There is NO WAY those things are 5 net carbs. Corn starch? Whole wheat flour? DEXTROSE?!? Heck, I have trouble believing they're even close to 16g total!

Geez, you'd think they'd treat us like we have brains! This makes me SO angry! Not because I've eaten them (I was always a little suspicious, and they didn't sound that good anyway), but because tons of other people have, believing that Subway and/or Atkins brand were being truthful. It's no wonder they're causing cravings and more than likely stalling people!

I'm sick of being treated like an idiot because I want to eat LC. Grr.

Okay, that was my rant. I hope.

Oh gosh, thanks for moving this for me! For the life of me I couldn't find the LC products forum! *sigh* Sometimes I'm so dumb.

I was looking for a sub-forum, now that I think about it. Is there something wrong with my brain, or was this once a sub-forum?

Nothing wrong with your brain, Alopex. This was a subforum until quite recently.

Since I completed my clean induction, I decided to go ahead and try one of them over the weekend. I think that the Chicken Bacon Ranch is really, really good. However, I probably could do without the wrap. (Just give me a chicken bacon ranch wrap without the wrap, please!!) The guy behind the counter did it!!! He asked me if I wanted chips or a cookie!!!

I assume they're Atkins brand, since that's the label on the ads and website.

NO---They are "Atkins Approved" not Atkins brand. They are GREAT I agree! The closest thing I found to those are Mama Lupe's. Damn good!

There are low glycemic corn starches. Those things are also in low carb breads tested to be carb freindly. I have had them many times and my ketosis has never been knocked out. That and I load them up with veggies too. People are to quick to discount things by the ingreadiants. You dont know the % of each one. Water could be 10 times the second one. The cornstarch could be less than 2 percent of a tortilla.
So there is a way these can be what they say "net carbs" Dateline tested them as 11 carbs or less. This means total carbs not net....

I dunno. Still sceptical. I doubt carb tests would care whether the carbs were high or low glycemic. I guess part of what bothered me isn't just that they appear to be so carby, but also just the sheer number and type of ingredients. I mean, why does a tortilla need two different leavening agents?

And the corn starch level must be pretty high, if the ingredients are indeed listed highest to lowest in content (which is food industry standard), since there are supposed to be 12g of protein and it would take a considerable amount of soy isolate to do that.

Just my thoughts. You may well be right. But if they are indeed 11g carbs, why wouldn't Subway be jumping on that and lowering the net carb count? How can they be 11g total carbs with 11g fibre and 1g sugar? What are they really, then?

There's something going on here, that's all I'm saying. My initial response was a little strong because I've always had a soft spot for Subway and this just looks so wrong.

When watching dateline they actually did test for NET carbs when they did the testing and the Chicken Bacon Wrap was off by 3 ( it is listed as 8) on the menu.

Well, can anyone say whether it is okay to eat the wraps at Subway and still be low carbing? Can we be sure it will be 11 grams of carbs and still be good and not cause cravings. I want to go and try them, but I want them to be good and worth it and not do any damage.

I think it depends upon how much you want to make eating grains a part of your life. And just because it's carb controlled or Atkins approved or carb-whatever doesn't exactly mean it's good for you or will work with your own unique metabolism.

We'll be seeing more and more of this as companies jump on the low-carb bandwagon. Ah yes, I'm sure a low-carb Krispy Kreme is right around the corner...
