Default Heart Rate: Fat Burn vs. Cardio

Alot of the machines at Bally's have the handgrips to tell you your heart rate. They have a little chart that shows what it should be (according to age) for fat burning and for cardio (with cardio being the larger #).

If you get your heart rate up to the cardio level, is that somehow not as good as the fat burning level (my goal of course at this point is to get rid of fat) ? Is it better and burns more fat (I know it burns more calories . . .).

It seems to me that the "fat burn" level is always too easy and I normally go all the way to the cardio level.

Anyone ??

Thanks,
Met

Post cardio vs anaerobic exercise

bottom line... muscle = more fat loss due to increased caloric expenditure. so focus on things that make muscle grow. cardio is great for the heart but I've heard it can be counter productive if it's in excess. lift weights and let your muscles do the work.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies, Nat and coolcat. That thread was what I wanted to see !

In addition to the cardio, I am using the machines at the health club too.
I plan on working up to free weights after a bit.

BTW can't go wrong with a good heart !!

thanks,
Met
