In my opinion, there are no benefits of using Amaryl. It's a sulfonylurea, and using it will ultimately burn out your beta cells. When I was first diagnosed, Amaryl was actually the first medication the doctor put me on. It worked, but I also experienced low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The problem is it causes you to produce insulin whether you need it or not.
I eventually came off the Amaryl and started taking Actos along with Glucophage XR. I started Atkins a little over a month ago, and I haven't had any need for medication. My blood glucose ranges from 83-100. I'm sure once I lose more weight, it should completely return to normal.
I think if you stick to LC, you shouldn't have a need for medication, and surely not for a sulfonylurea. Luckily I caught the problem early before my BG was over 150.
Hope this helps!
