Usually high sodium levels are the culprit in water retention. They are "hidden" in processed deli meats and cheese. Believe it or not, to lose water, you need to drink lots and lots of water. Seems silly but it flushes the water out. The TOM can also contribute to water retention and excess weight gained. I put on 2-3 lbs. before, during, and just afterwards. Other posters have said they gain 5-10 lbs. during their TOM. The only time I had water retention problems was in the last months of my pregnancy four years ago, pre-LCing, and it went away postpartum.

I've found that if I have fewer than 8 - 10 glasses of water a day on Atkins, I retain a lot of water. If you can force it down for a few days, it really does help. Just be prepared to go to the bathroom 15 times a day!

I suffer from water retention, even though I take a prescribed diuretic daily. Drinking lots and lots of water does help me to control it.

I agree with the tons of water plus some people on the forum swear by warm water with the juice of 1/2 a lemon and some splenda. That's supposed to get things moving, too.

I find when I eat too much bacon or too many hot wings I retain water badly. Just drink a lot of water and you should be fine.
