I know what it means to be subscribed to a thread. But I haven't seen anything happen as a result of being subscribed to four of the forums since the day I joined.

What's supposed to happen?

On a very related note, is there a way to receive an e-mail notification whenever any new post is made to a forum, regardless of whether it is a thread you are subscribed to, a new thread or a thread that you are not subscribed to - although it might be nice to be able to suppress this last one.

In fact, if we simply received an e-mail notification whenever a new thread is started in a forum we are subscribed to that would be wonderful. In particular, it would help us respond more rapidly to new members in the two Introduction forums.

Thanks a lot!

Currently, subscribing to a forum simply places that forum into your user profile (control panel). So when you go to to your control panel, you see a list of your subscribed forums. This provides a way for members to have short cuts to their favourite forums and sub-forms listed in one place.

The option to be notified about new threads in a specific forums is not yet automated, but can be done manually. Admins can can add emails to each forum for notification. The only draw back to this, is that it won't give you an unsubscribe link, like it does for subscribed threads.

If I understand this correctly, it means that I could ask the Administrator (not the moderator?) to make it so that I receive an e-mail for new threads for specific forums. Then I would received those e-mails for those forums but no one else would unless they made a similar request. Likewise, I would not receive such e-mails for forums that I had not requested notification for.

If this is the case, then that is certainly the effect that I am hoping for. But I agree that it would be an unreasonable burden on everyone involved - particularly the Admins.

But if it can become automated, that would sure be nice.

Thanks for the information.

Yes, that's exactly how it works.

I suspect one reason this functionality was not added, is the burden it can place on a server, if thousands subscribe to a forum, and that forum is very active in terms of new threads per minute.

Add to it the fact that even if the process is automated, many will complain once they get the notification, will ignore the unsubscribe link, and contact the poor webmaster directly to fix things without telling him the username and then he emails back and ....
