Hi BayCity,
I can give you a quick outline, but it would be best to get the book as understanding WHY we are eating the foods we do really helps one to continue on with the plan in time of doubt (because it is not a quick loss plan).
Each meal and snack must contain protein, veg, carb and fat. Foods should be as whole and unprocessed as possible, - no artificial sweetners (stevia and a tiny amount of honey is ok), no white flours and few man made products (bread, crackers, cookies), no damaged oils - (fried foods, margarine, hydrogenated things), no sugar, no caffeine, alcohol or tobacco (though some people wean off these products or continue to use them sparingly or in the case of me(smoker) heplessly.
Getting the book would enable you to do the plan properly because the amount of carbs allowed per meal and snack depends on the state of your adrenal glands and insulin sensitivity/resistance - there are descriptions in the book to help you figure this out without blood tests. Also the book defines what is considered a carb. In SPII only starchy vegetables, fruits, grains and yogurt is counted as carbs - but even knowing this there are variables that the book explains. If you want to give it a try without the book. The default plan is 3 meals with 20 carbs each and 2 snacks of with 20 carbs.
Even those of us with the book have lots of questions, so tune in here if you need clarification.
