Default getting ENOUGH carbs on a CKD?!!!

I think I'm taking the 'low-carb' attitude a little too seriously

18g carb in post workout shake don't count for carb total.
25.5g fiber per day is subtracted from total carbs.

Which leaves me with:

total daily carbs: 49g

with subtractions: 49 - 18 - 25.5 = 5.5g carbs

I eat about a cup of green beans, about 1/2 cup cooked spinach, almonds, cream, dressings besides mayo, cheese and peanut butter. They all have carbs, but most have fiber to. Argh!!!

My numbers are all pretty accurate since I use the USDA website to get the actual values (I don't like that labels can be rounded).

Sigh.....what to do except start eating a bag of salad greens everyday?

i have been told to always aim for zero carbs on CKD. The main point is to deprive your body of carbs during the week then replenish ot on the weekends.

Why would post-workout carbs not count? I count every carb I injest--isn't that right?

post workout carbs aren't counted because they are used by the body very rapidly to aid in recovery.

I've always done the absolute 0. Maybe it depends on how easily you get into ketosis. For me it's very hard so I really go at it. True, it really sucks for a day or so but once I am in ketosis my energy level is very good and I feel kind of euphoric almost. As long as I don't overtrain in that state, I am fine for the remainder of the keto phase.

I'm using Metaostix (ketostix clone), and it shows that I'm ketosis...been in ketosis for several days. I don't think I have a problem with getting in ketosis, just am curious to know what could bump me out of it and knowing the general rules of what carbs count and which ones don't (ie. sugar vs. fiber).

If you're in ketosis then that's fine.

I've noticed that it really takes me getting into ketosis to feel better. Once I am in ketosis I can raise protein and maybe even add a few carbs, but those two-three days of getting there are critical.

By the way, last time I looked at Metabostix they were twice as expensive as Ketostix and there weren't even as many sticks in the package. To me that was another scam of the dieting industry. Not that Bayer is a bunch of angels either...

I couldn't find ketostix where I live and was lucky enough to find metabostix ($15 for the pack). I don't know why I didn't even think about looking online for them though LOL....I seem to buy everything else online (well, supplement wise

Have you tried using ALA to help get into ketosis faster? I seemed to have gotten into ketosis in about a day or two using about 1.6g a day. Besides, ALA is a great anti-oxidant

Hmm... did you ask the pharmacist? They usually have them behind the counter...

I've tried ALA, it didn't really help getting into ketosis faster, but it did help during the carbup. I can accomplish the same effect by carbing better though.

A big part of getting into ketosis for me is related to how much carbs I eat. If I eat less, let's say 1500 g (for me that's less), then I can get into ketosis within 3 or so days BUT this leaves me undercarbed for the following week. It takes longer if I eat more carbs but I can deal with the workouts. The obvious solution is to balance the carbing and the workouts but I've not mastered that art yet. Not because it's complicated but because I am lazy...

I didn't ask a pharmacist.....didn't even occur to me. I don't think I really need them anymore anyways since I'm starting to get the 'feel' of ketosis down, even though I've only been in ketosis since Sunday/Monday.

I was using ALA when I first started keto at 1.6g a day, never felt anything from it, but I think it drastically helped onset of ketosis. Now I only use it when I wake up and with my post workout shake. I'm still waiting to see when I feel too depleted to finish a workout before I set up a carb-load day...so far I don't really crave any carbs, but it will just feel good to have a day of higher calories!

When I do a CKD, I usually keep the carbs to Atkins induction level during the week, 20 per day, and I have much success with this. I think it is a very individualized thing.

I'm VERY new to CKD (just finished week II) and I'm using Induction level carbs as well (20g). BUT, I'm considering switching to zero carbs for a day or so following the carb up---because this past week it took me until THURSDAY (began the LC on Sunday) to get into ketosis! Was in by Wed. the week before, though.

I have to agree strongly that it's an individualized thing.

I know this thread is a bit of a dead issue at the moment (maybe), but I thought I'd comment/question anyway.

I asked Lyle about carbs---should it be zero, should it be more, etc.----and he said zero carbs aren't really the aim. Low carbs, yes, VERY low, yes (in the book he mentions around 30g), but not zero.

I've not finished the book yet, but nearly, so I've not really seen anything mentioning post-workout carbs at all. I don't do the shakes because I couldn't figure out how to fit them in to the day's totals, and the zero carb shakes I've found are too expensive for my budget right now ($50/jar).

Anyway, just a thought to ponder. This issue of how many carbs will drive me nuts until doomsday, I think.
