Default Ham!

Very tasty....but very tricky!

Due to the labelling rules here, the labels almost always read zero carbs per serving and yet I notice dextrose on the label.

Is there a rule of thumb for counting carbs in ham that comes from the grocery?

Thanks! barefoot

Most cured meats have some form of sugar in them because of the curing process. You'd be hard-pressed to find any without it.

Best advice I have is to find the ones with the lowest amount. The farther down on the list of ingredients it is, the lower the percentage.

Idon't think there is such a thing as sugar free ham, I've looked an dlooked. I managed to find sugar free jerky at one health food store, but they wanted a small fortune fo rit.

Basicaly a product can have up to 0.9g of carbs per serving and be listed as 0. Watch serving size too as many companies will make that very small to have fat, cals, and carbs be low. 1/2 a slice of bread or 1/2 a miffin is an example (I found what I thought were moderate carb brautwursts, then I read serving was 1/2 a sausage)

Like Potato said, look for ones where dextrose is at the bottom of the list. Hopefully under heading "May contain up to 2% of the following" Also look for multiple kinds of sugars instead of just 1. (some hams are honey baked with mollassas, sugar, high fructose corn syrup and dextrose)

Ladybelle-- not to sound picky, but some of the ones with several kinds of sugars listed actually have MORE sugar in total than those that list it as "Water, salt, dextrose..."

That's what I ment, was to watch out for them. Rereading my post I guess I did have it in wrong paragraph

Usually when they define the different sugars it's so they won't have to list the first ingredient as pure sugar
