Excess protien can be converted to gluclose by the body, just as carbs are. Atkins states that when he says to have only adiquet protien, and that his WOE is a high fat diet, not a high protien one.
Another thing to remember is that even on the fat fast there are some carbs and protien there. If you were to do pure protien (for the ease of math) you would have a hard time reaching 1,000 calories.
You would have to eat 250g of protien a day (that's assuming 4 cals per gram of protien). Another problem is besides shrimp (which has some carbs) fat free protien is hard to come by naturally. Even bonless, skinless, chicken breasts contain more then 10% fat. Almost any protien with little to no fat has carbs (fat free cottage cheese, shell fish, and so on).
Remember too that fat has many benifits such as to heart and digestive system. While it would be rare (someone would have to have a preexisting condition) there could also be problems with kidneys and so on. The condition may be so slight that under normal eating, or even the adiquet protien of an LC diet, it's unoticable, but when you really jack up the protien it could be too much.
