Default poultry paranoia

I love rotisserie chicken from Safeway or Swiss Chalet, but haven't had any since starting Atkin's a couple weeks ago because I think that they probably have suger injected into them. Or they probably have something else that would have carbs on them.

I haven't bothered asking someone that works at either of these places because they wouldn't know what happens to the chickens before it gets to them.

Do you think I'm being overly paranoid?

Not overly paronoid. Just call them and ask if they use and sugar or sauces in their preparation.

At my neighborhood grocery the ingredients are plainly marked.

If it isn't posted it shouldn't be a scary thing to ask....

All the best.

We had rotisserie chicken for lunch today, and the ones at our Safeway were "injected with an 18% solution of dextrose, etc. . ." - we didn't read any further. Got a non-injected chicken at the Thriftway, instead. Your Safeway may be different, though. (You'd think they could leave the meat alone, at least, wouldn't you?)

I used to work at a safeway in the deli and we didn't actually prep those chickens, we only roasted them. They came to use already packed with the seasonings already taken care of and we just popped them in the oven, so I doubt those most of the deli workers could tell you what's in them right off the top of their heads. That said, I do think that we had a book that listed the nutritional info of items like that, so just ask them, they might have a way to look it up.

The ones from my local market are injected. The info is right on the hot container they come in. But asking can never hurt.

I only buy Kosher meat(for religious purposes) so please enlighten me. Why do they inject chickens/poultry with Dextrose? I eat chicken in restaurants though, so whats up?

Some rotisserie chicken is safe. You need to check the labels. If they've messed with it, they're supposed to say so.

Post Yes and...

This would be true of some frozen chicken breasts that you'll find at the warhouse clubs (Sam's, Costco) too. Not all of them, but most of them are injected, though not all with dextrose. Always read those labels!

And on a similar topic, I'll reiterate that about 8 months ago I heard that IHOP puts pancake batter in their omlettes in order to make them so big. I wrote to IHOP and they responded that they do indeed add pancake batter (flour) to the omlette batter. Just FYI....

Angry IHOP

I'm so glad you told us about the IHOP omlette! IHOP was one of my favorite restaurants on the weekend, but I will definitely stay away from their omlettes from now on when I go! I guess you just never know exactly what's in them unless you cook them yourself.
