Question Does the bacteria in Yoghurt eat up the sugars, and therefore the carbs?

Hi there everyone,

I have heard through the grapevine that the bacteria in yoghurt eats the sugar content, making the carb count much lower. Does anyone have any factual knowledge of this? Or am I dreaming (hoping...love my yoghurt)?

Cheers Cheley.

There are still carbs in yogurt. I am lactose (milk sugar) intolerant and will still have reactions if I eat yogurt.

That is what I go by, there is about 4g carbs per cup (for whole, non fruit added plain yoghurt) based on the theory that the good bacteria feed off the sugars....

From a search on the topic "yoghurt" I came up with these many posts http://forum.lowcarber.org/search.php?searchid=37766 have a read through some of these, there is a tonne of info on yoghurt & carb values on this site....

"There are still carbs in yogurt. I am lactose (milk sugar) intolerant and will still have reactions if I eat yogurt."
Atriana.

I find this interesting because, both my children were lactose intolerant from birth but one of the things the Gastro-enterologists said was that Yoghurt was OK because the lactose had been digested during formation. Maybe believing this I did not notice any adverse side effects, but I certainly did not see any.

Thankyou so much Casval and Fiona,

I was a little worried that i was over indulging in it as my weight has come to a stand still for the last 4 days. I have 1/2 cup in a whey shake for breakfast.
Now i can have it and feel guilt free....maybe that will start the loss again! lol. fingers crossed.

cheers Cheley.

In the forum they are mentioning full fat yoghurt, by any chance do you guys know of a brand here in Oz that is full fat? All I have seen are low in fat....

Anyway thanks so much for the info you have made this little LC very happy...

hmm...not too sure about Jalna. I have a tub at home and I really dislike it. My favourite is the the European Style Creamy Yoghurt from Dairy Farmers. It's really smooth and tastes delish.

Question Yoghurt maker???

I was wondering if you can make low-carb yoghurt with a yoghurt maker??? I was thinking if you used cream, splenda & berries (spose you can add nuts too) you could make a low-carb yoghurt yourself. Has anyone tried it???

I make my own using the EasyYo yoghurt maker, they sell full fat style yoghurts as well as the other styles, makes a nice yoghurt then I just add some liquid Sucralose & some fresh passionfruit pulp and I have my yoghurt to eat on my granola each morning

Granola is like a cereal, this is the recipe I use (I omit the splenda and usually add macadamia nuts) ... I then put a serve or so into my yoghurt and its just like eating museli & yoghurt

Note - flax seeds are what the Yanks call linseeds, you can buy them as preground in the health food shops or grind your own in a coffee grinder, remember to put any ground seeds into the fridge or freezer as they go rancid unless cooked..

oh and calculations and this recipe are from the Low Carb Luxury website

COLD Cereal
Piekinns' Flax Seed Granola from Piekinns

1 lb ground flax seeds (6.35net in 100g)(about 25net carbs in 1lb)
1 cup shredded coconut (0.4x16T=6.4 net g)
1 cup thin sliced almonds (1.7x8=13.6 net g)
1 Tbl pumpkin pie spice (I use a mix of fresh nutmeg and cinamon)
1/2 cup splenda (1/2c splenda is about 12g) (or use liquid with egg whites=0)
1 Tbl vanilla
6 egg whites (0.3x6=1.8)
1/2 cup water
total net carbs=21.8+flax net carbs 25= 46.8 total recipe not counting splenda, add 12 for 1/2 cup of splenda.
Bake in 150 degree C oven for 3 hours, breaking up any lumps on a regular basis

Yum!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the above granola could be made without the egg whites. I am vegetarian and don't eat eggs but I would love some granola. I make a cereal with flax seed meal 2 Tablespoons and Protein powder,1/3 cup. Mix it with water and Microwave for 1 min then stir then microwave for 1 more minute, stir and add splenda or splenda sweetened syrup and cream. I love it. I have not been using Yogurt but plan to with this new information. It 'd be great with granola!
