Exclamation Question about eating out...

Hi everyone!
LC'ing is still going well, but I don't technically know if I have had a "bad" day or not...
Last night I went to someones house & they had chinese, so I ordered what looked like the safest thing - Beef & Broccoli (NO RICE). I only had a small serving & obviously the beef & broccoli were OK, I am wondering if anyone has insight on the sauce

Thanks!

Beth

The sauce most likely had some starch in it, but how much is hard to say. I looked up a Beef and broccoli entree by Swanson in my book of carb counts, and it listed a 10 ounce serving at 50 grams of carb (WOW!). Next time, you may want to ask the waiter before you order what the sauce (if there is sauce) is thickened with. In my experience, it's fairly difficult to eat at Chinese restaurants without getting some sort of starch type sauce unless you order plain meat and veggies or ask if the sauce can be left off. Whatever the carb count, it's eaten now and can't be undone. Keep on truckin' with the low carb and chalk it up to experience.

I hate to be a total killjoy but...

its not the sauce, its the beef.

Usually the beef is marinated in a mixture of cornstarch, rice wine vinegar and oyster flavor sauce so it becomes very tender, very quickly.

A much better alternative, although more expensive, is the whole steamed fish. Usually steamed fish has just some shredded ginger and green onions tossed onto it to give it some flavor. It is delicious and if you ask they will stir fry some veggies for you in oil without additional sauce.

You can also try the peking duck, also more expensive, but you can take off the skin and it comes without sauce. The skin is usually coated with some kind of sugar sauce to help crisp it up and give it a lot of flavor . But underneath that skin is delicious duck meat. They also give you stir fried shredded veggies, ask for no sauce on the them and avoid the plum sauce and pancakes.

If you live around the Alexandria area try the Peking Duck house on rt. 1 in the hybla valley. Great duck, very accomodating people and unfortunately for us, we moved from there a year ago.

Happy eating.

oops - guess the rest of that is going in the trash

slowday - thank you - I have been the Peking Duck a few times, many years ago. If I can drag hubby out to hybla valley, I would love some good duck

Thanks!

Beth
