You bet there are Things like glycerine and sugar alcohols (malitol, sorbitol, manitol - the 'ols') are generally responsible for the hidden carbs in bars - they are used to give them that 'mouth appeal' - texture, taste, smoothness, etc. This isnt usually a problem with shakes.
You would be on the lookout for the sweetner with a shake - aspartame is now a with Atkins. You are permitted Splenda (sucralose) however.
I use a protein shake every day - sometimes twice a day - to get my levels of protein up to an acceptable level for weight lifting and muscle growth and I have had no ill effects from the shakes I have used.
When in doubt as to carb count, remember, we have a Hidden Carb Counter on this site, under Low Carb Tools (it is the second link on that page). You can punch your numbers in to get the real count on any food item.
