Default Ben & Jerrys ...Half Baked lo-carb ice cream carb count question

My daughter bought me a container of this delicious ice cream tonight. "Ben & Jerrys, half Baked Low - Carb"

I am confused about the carb count... On the cover it says "net 5 grams of carbs per 1/2 Cup serving"..... On the back of the carton it says... 1/2 cup serving ~ carbs 18 grams... dietary fiber...4grams....

Well if you subtract the 4 grams of fiber from the 18 grams of carbs that leaves 14 grams of carbs ...Right? So why does the cap claim there is only 5 net grams of carbs per 1/2 cup serving....

is there something I don't know, that I should know?

I like the what the caps says.... but what about what it says on the back of the carton.... BTW this stuff is excellent! ~ Osuz

Sugar alcohols don't count either in the carb count since they have minimal effect on blood sugar. You will however find some people that say that the sugar alcohols stall them out in the weight loss dept. Luckily I haven't had that problem.

The missing 9 grams of carbs are most likely sugar alcohols. Look for ingredients ending in 'ol'. Whether or not to count sugar alcohols in the carb count is very controversial

In my personal opinion I would watch out for Matitol though. It's GI value is sky high. So far I havent had a problem with sugar alcohols but I think maltitol might have effected my weight loss this week.

Yep, it's true, the discrepency is most likely sugar alcohols...something that is a YMMV (your mileage may vary) thing. They don't tend to affect my loss, though I do try to limit my consumption of them.

They don't effect my loss, in fact they can help. The gas pain and diareah from them cause me to not want to look at food and ditch some needed water weight :P

Thanks for the info... I'm not much of an ice cream
eater, never have been, usually a tablespoon or two from the carton will do.

T just seems nice to know it's in the freezer if I want it.

Sometimes on this induction phase, I crave things I really never ate much before... like cold juicy apples and
crunchy stuff...but I am finding great replacements for the crunchy, so that is solved. eg. pork rinds...pumpkin seeds... my own cheese crackers... ect.

I spray pam on a plate...sprinkle with shreadded parm cheese... and put in microwave for 2 min. when it's done let it cool...break into crackers, and dip into your favorite no sugar low carb pasta sauce..... SOOOO satisfying!
