Default glucometer

I have access to a glucometer..not sure if this is the correct term...and I want to see if I am sensitive to sugar alcohols. How do I determine this? I was thinking of eating a pure-de-light bar and then doing the test. How long do I wait before I test?

You need to test your glucose BEFORE you eat, as well as after. Also, it is a good idea to test multiple times after - every half hour after eating - three times. So:

test before, record reading
eat bar
wait 1/2 hour, test, record reading
wait 1/2 hour, test, record reading
wait 1/2 hour, test, record reading

You should have at least a mild rise from the effective carbs, but it should drop quickly afterwards if the alcohols don't affect you. For me, it was a MAJOR rise - over 240 - and a slow return to normalcy.

As an alternate example, my son's low-carb cheesecake with DaVinci syrup over it, which contains approximately 5 carbs, caused my readings to go from 159 (after another food with carbs) to 184 (highest), but it quickly dropped back down into the high 160's range and then slowly dropped from there. This is probably STILL more insulin response than I really want, and I'm considering halving the cheesecake slices to slow it down, but it is far better than what the Sorbee brand candy bar did to me!

Someone has suggested to me that it might not be the sugar alcohols that bother me. It might be the glycerin. I need to test that theory. If you are testing, try to avoid one with glycerin for your first test.
