Question Kidney donor looking for info

Two years ago I gave my Father a kidney. They told me the only nutritional restriction was not to have too much protein. The result has been increased carb consumption and 20 pounds gained. I'm looking for anyone out there who has used a low-carb diet or knows someone who has used a low-carb diet when they have only one kidney. I can't seem to get a straight or consistent answer about the risks vs. the risks of excess weight (6'4"/265 now). I have been overweight my whole life and really want a solution. If there is a way to do the diet while being monitored for renal function I would be happy to do that too. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hi Johndro,

Some of the members here might have some experience in this...

In the meantime, have you tried you question at ASDL-C? They have thousands of members from all over the world!

Have a look at Protein Power by Dr. Michael Eades. There are guidelines for minimum daily protein requirements. For example, my daily minimum requirement is 9 ounces of protein. Not that much at all! Low-carbing is not necessarily high-protein, just adequate protein.

The real beauty of low-carbing is that the way you eat can be about balance. Everyone interprets and practices what balance is for them in different ways. Another bonus is eating real food. Not shakes or bars, endless cans of tuna or high-carb substitutes, but real food.

The Zone Diet by Barry Sears is a little less restrictive in terms of carb consumption, so you may want to look at that too.

Karen
