Default Questioin about Metforman

I was wondering if I could get some feedback from people put on Metformin after starting LC. I have been on Atkins for about 6 weeks and was put on Metformin almost a week ago. My main question has to do with wieght loss. Has anyone notice a difference in their wieght loss, good or bad

Thanx Tara

Hi Tara!

I was put on Metformin about the same time that I started low carbing and I can't really say one way or the other whether it actually helped my weight loss. I know that it didn't hurt it. The diet itself does a lot towards decreasing insulin production and insulin resistance. I think the Metformin helps in getting you back to normal more quickly, but once you're there it doesn't do much more to help with the weight loss.

I've been on metformin for 2 years and started Atkins June 4/02. Exactly 1 month later my doctor took me OFF metformin, as my blood sugar level is basically normal. I did find though that when I went off the metformin my weight loss stopped for a couple of weeks until my body came out of the shock. Between losing 17 lbs and then having my meds stop I'm sure my bod didn't know what the heck I was doing, so watch your blood sugar levels, if it stays between 5.0 and 6.2 you probably should talk again with the doc, you probably don't need the metformin if you're type 2 and not on anything else. My doctor was concerned about sugar levels dropping too much, it's not supposed to happen with metformin but with my sugar levels at 5.2 to 5.9 regularly now, she said I don't need it. Yahoo!!!
Hope this helps, metformin does help a bit with the weight loss as it curbs appetite a bit but I have started to adjust physically to everything now and feel great.

I started Atkins in July of 2001 and followed the plan religiously. The first 45 days I lost 5 pounds. Quite disappointing! I then started metformin and the next 30 pounds melted off in record time. The benefits of the metformin on weight seem to stop there at the 30 pounds. I've stalled at the 35 and am working through that now. Good luck with both the eating plan and the metformin!

Thanx for your input guys. I am doing my weigh-in tomorrow so I'll have to see if I lose more or less that I expected.
Thanx again,
Tara
