Default SommerSweet Problem?

I found this at: http://www.westonaprice.org/caustic...spring2002.html

"According to a tabloid paper, actress Suzanne Somers, who defended her decision to refuse chemotherapy for breast cancer on the Larry King show, has gained 25 pounds (Globe, 1/22/02). Somers is the author of several diet books including Eat, Cheat and Melt the Fat Away and Somersize Desserts. Her weight loss program calls for eating protein, carbohydrates and fats separately and the use of a “no-cal” sweetener called SomerSweet made of fiber, fructose and soy extract. Hollywood wags blame her weight gain on overeating, but we think there might be another reason—soy extract, which depresses thyroid function leading to weight gain. The fiber and fructose in the sweetener probably don’t help either. Fructose can cause liver problems and fiber can block the absorption of important minerals. "

Um, it's my understanding that Somersweet is made with MUNG bean extract, not soy. But, it could be that they've reformulated the product recently.

We've had several discussions about SomerSweet, in particular the dangers of FRUCTOSE. You may want to check out this post and thread in our Products forum.

Thanks, Doreen. Actually, I am not interested in sweeteners and I don't use them. I just thought it was interesting. Probably not.

LOL .. me too!

I try to keep abreast of sweetener information for the members, but like you, my own usage is minimal. I do have a bottle of stevia, a bottle of SugarTwin liquid (which is cyclamate in Canada) and some Splenda to serve when company comes

I think the info is interesting and valuable. It helps readers if they can have all the information to make a choice.

Keep up the good work

Doreen
