Default Doctor Oz

I seem to recall a discussion on this forum about Doctor Oz and his misleading representations about certain untested products. I could not find that discussion, so am starting a new thread.

In this morning's news, a group of physicians have written a letter requesting his removal for recommending untested and possibly harmful products. Physicians are complaining about Dr Oz

The 'nutritionally ignorant' public keeping looking for that 'magic bullet' that will allow them to eat what they want, when they want, and how much they want, without gaining weight or causing harm to themselves. They slavishly follow his recommendations because they see him as a 'expert.' I hope the letter these physicians wrote will create an atmosphere of physician accountability on TV programs. The drive for money always seems to trump medical ethics (or any other kind of ethical behavior for that matter) for some people.

Happy someone's finally calling him out.

He was quoted saying the following about low carb diets in Time Magazine: "Anytime you cut out entire food groups, that's not healthy." Willful ignorance.

The 'search' function here doesn't work. You can try using the google one (after you hit 'search', not at the top of your screen)

*edited to add: This news item is worthy of it's own thread IMO.

When it's time to criticize low carb, those silly food groups always come up. But then the same person will be fine with vegan, or dairy-free. I guess they can do that though, since somebody decided that beans belong in the meat group, and soy in the dairy group.

Maybe that's what he meant?

Oz, appropriate surname for the popinjay. I pay no attention to his attempts at prying money away from unsuspecting people who are simply looking for someone to lead them out of the nutritional wilderness.

He's not a doctor. He's an entertainer. And a shill.

The standards are totally different, people!

The minute he starts saying that he is not giving medical advice, which he did in his most recent statement, is the minute he should lose all credibility. He started his show as a doctor providing medical insight. Oprah put him out there and then he didn't have anywhere near enough material to fill an hour every day and what credible doctor would? So he sold his soul for this quackery. I think he was quite a reputable cardiologist once upon a time. I guess the money and fame made it easy for him to just go along for the ride.

If he only interviewed his guests he would be an asset to the health community. His interviewing etiquette is terrible and he cuts off his guests early, gives his silly demonstrations, sums up what his guests say incorrectly, and directs the audience to follow only his advice. Most of the time he has no guest and just shills for a supplement, his 'special' diet, or other quackery. I watch for his guests like Perlmutter and Davis and viewed with horror as he cut them off within a minute, interpreted their lifetime of research incorrectly, and then took over the podium to give his own spin of advice. How can he keep world class researchers coming back to his show if he doesn't let them speak?

Because people keep him on the air by patronizing his show and products. The way out is to quit that.
