The Dr. may not know best, but if you were following the plan incorrectly, it might have given you problems, can't tell at this late date. Whatever you do, keep your good habits, drinking water, eating healthy greens, exercise. Take that low-fat nonsense with a grain of salt. After all, it has only been done for 30 years or so, and it hasn't improved most people's health. You need essential fatty acids to live and function normally. Make sure you don't starve on a low cal, low fat diet! The weight will just come back when you start to eat "normally" again.
You could read Protein Power and The Schwartzbien Principle just for research. You might be able to find them at the library.
5-8 carbs a day was not what Atkins planned on, you need those greens in your diet to keep you healthy. Keep taking vitamins!
