Thumbs down What a Rip-off !

I was in Holland and Barrett today to buy the whey protein everyone is raving about - I'll post separately in that thread

What did I see but the Atkins Advantage Chocolate Decadence Bar. Expensive at £1.79, but I was really curious and decided to treat myself... Big mistake It tastes absolutely revolting

Ah well, at least it reconfirms my decision to stick to real food rather than the low carb frankenstuff which is becoming available over here at long last

I was in H&B yesterday and grabbed a choc hazelnut crunch one, I like those. At least it stopped me going and buying a doughnut! I have to say, I think that these bars shouldn't really be for every day but for times like yesterday when there was nothing else and I was starving.

I must admit Sylvia my experience with Atkins bars has not been good either.

I also got the trots after eating mine which was on the way back from Egypt. I know it was only partly responsible, but do think it prolonged my agony!

I think after all I heard, I rather stick to Pepperami.....costs the same (depending where you buy it), can be stored in handbag forever (heat or cold no problem) and doesn't give me the runs...

I do like the ready made shakes though. I have a spare chocolate one in the fridge fro when the sweet tooth comes through. I had one, just after they came out and it was nice. So I bought one for "just in case" and put it in the fridge. It's still there.....Ever since I got it, I got no more sweet cravings. So these shakes really work

Default Atkins Bars

I agree, I don't like them much either, I've got a half eaten one in my bag which I think I'll just bin. I prefer the carbolite (spelling!) bars out of super drug, they are very expensive but at least they taste like the real thing and are enjoyable if kept for special occasions. My kids bought be a couple for Mother's Day bless them.

I agree, the Atkins chocolate is not good. Especially the peanut butter cups—YUCK. Other companies do it way better.

I agree with you, the superdrug "picnic" bars are ABSOLUTELY FAB!! They taste just like the "real" version and Superdrug LC products are WAY cheeper than anyone elses.

I found the Carbolite ones in Superdrug upset my stomach almost instantly. At well over a quid for a wafer bar I don't think so! Boots do a wafer bar which is only 60p and very nice - oh and a fruit n nut bar too.

Hehe this type of topic makes me laugh.

You've chosen a diet/way of life to pursue, which essentially tells you to cut out processed foods, hi-sugar foods etc.

The entire diet/way of life is based on getting back to more natural food, stopping snacking, cutting out junk food etc.

So what happens when you are craving or want a snack? You go out and try these LC bars, snack bars etc which are essentially crutches to hold up your flaky intolerance to no sugar

Its probably just me but haven't you just tried snacking on natural products? Apples, strawberrys that type of thing? They are all sweet but natural. Reading between the lines in the Atkins WOL it seems the entire ethos is moving the human body away from the Western pre-processed mush we are served to something alot more wholesome/natural.

Fruit is the answer to your snack prayers

Just an observation , I just find it ironic that we're trying to kick the snack bars, sweets, soda routine and yet we're not kicking that at all as we're finding alternatives. Its almost like cutting down smoking Marboro by buying Silk Cut

[note: I do indulge in Diet Coke every now and again, not regularly, but I haven't experienced any negative side effects]

I don't like the idea of any of the low carb snacks, like the atkins stuff. I agree with Matt that it goes against the grain to eat that stuff when the whole point is a more natural diet. That's one of the reasons I don't like atkins though I do like low carb. I distrust the whole idea of 'atkins nutritionals' and the prices are outrageous. William Banting printed his diet at his own expense because he wanted to share his breakthrough with as many people as he could because he was so grateful.

Sometimes though, a piece of fruit just won't do it! I personally like Green and Black's chocolate. It's very rich so you can only eat a bit and is relatively low carb. It doesn't have any after effects either. They have the dark chocolate and there's a hazelnut/brazil nut milk choc(I think those are the nuts) that's delicious with 40grams per 100. I doubt anyone could eat 100 grams without feeling sick! About a third of that is enough.

Sometimes when I see all these sugar alternatives I think I'm better off with plain old sugar- at least I know what the long term effects of that is. I don't like chemicals of any kind in food if I can avoid them.

I keep the odd Carbolite and Atkins bar in my locker at work in case I get an attack of the munchies during my shift. It's either that or the regular chocolate or crisp machine . They're OK now and again.

What's the carb count on the Lindt please? I LOVE Lindt chocolate and if I can have a square or 2 when I absolutely desperately have to have chocolate (not often as the stuff gives me a migraine, so I've never been a big chocolate eater) then this will be fantastic.
