Default So, what about Chana Dal?

Chana Dal is insanely low on the glycemic index, but rates quite high in carbs even after taking the fiber into account.

Protein 25.4 g
Fat 3.7 g
Carbohydrate 47.4 g
Crude fibre 11.2 g
Ash 3.2 g
Calories 327
glycemic index of 7-16 depending on the study
data from this link

I'm not doing a plan that puts me into ketosis, so i think that something this low on the glycemic index would probably be ok for me.

Does anyone know more about this?

Plans like Schwarzbein and the Zone also include legumes in moderation.

I can't make a comment about it being good or bad for your plan because I'm not familiar with it. But if it's based on the GI, then there should be no problem with it.

Bumping this up bc i tried out the Chana Dal and while it may have a low glycemic index for some people, i might as well have eaten a big huge glob of mashed potatoes. It totally crashed me right out.

I guess for me a carb is a carb is a carb.

Doing some research on chana dal, I came across this old thread. It is possible that you might not have purchased chana dal. Apparently there are some companies that sell yellow split peas and call them chana dal. Yellow split peas have a completely different glycemic index.

Thanks for digging this up, Scott. I was wondering about this myself. Have you experimented with adding chana dal to Atkins? I'd love to hear your results if you have.

bike2work, having only read DANDR and not remembering it as clearly as I like, I think G.I. is important but no where nearly as important as carb content. I may be wrong but I see it as low G.I. foods are good for avoiding craving and low carbs for ketosis. So even though the fiber in chana dal gives it a low G.I. the carb content is enough to potentially put one out of ketosis. As far as I know. I'm still doing some research. Chana dal certainly sounds like a good candidate for maintenance, though.
