Metamucil Powder Warning!
Hi all,
Two weeks ago yesterday, I started using the orange flavored Metamucil powder (1 tsp, 3 times per day) to keep things "moving". It tasted kind of yucky, used up quite a few carbs (4.8) and some of my sweetener allowance daily (it doesn't say how much, so I counted the entire day's worth as 1 sweetener). I realized after buying it that I should have bought the plain psyllium husks at the health food store, but since it was too late and I'd spent the money, I decided to use up the Metamucil and then get the better alternative next time.
The first week, it didn't seem to affect me too much. The second week, I stayed the same exact weight all week with the exception of one 1/2 pound loss mid-week that I regained again during the week. During this time, I seemed to be more hungry so I increased my food right up to 20 carbs (I was at usually 17-18 carbs before) and added more fats. Sometimes I'd still be hungry and since I'd be out of carbs, I'd eat more fats and/or more meats. I just didn't feel quite as good as I thought I should. It's funny how quickly you can forget how good this WOL *should* make you feel.
Frustrated (and sick of the nasty stuff) I decided to cut out the Metamucil on 10/1/03. Today, just 2 days later, I weigh 2 pounds less. I haven't increased my water intake, yet I definitely noticed a sudden increase in urination. Plus I just felt much less hungry and couldn't begin to eat as much. I know this hardly counts as a whoosh but I sure was happy to see the drop anyhow, plus I just feel better!
I don't have ketostix so I can't be sure but I believe that Metamucil threw me right out of ketosis. Be warned -- Metamucil works but there's a price (at least there was for me). I learned the lesson and will be getting psyllium husks today. The Metamucil is going in the garbage.
