Default If they really knew...

My grandma asked me the other day if I would like to go visit a relative in another state with her for 10 days. I love to travel, I could use a vacation..Problem is..Im afraid of the food...I remember visiting this relative when I was little and having mounds of french toast for breakfast, muffins galore..I havent given a definate answer on whether I will go or not. If anybody really knew my main reason for leaning towards not going they would all be so mad. Theyre already all over me about not eating *normal*. My other reason is because of work, and needing the money..What do I do?

Hmm that's a hard one. I'd say go if you think you can avoid the food thing. If it's going to be be impossible, you do have a good excuse NOT to go, (work!). You don't have to tell anyone the real reason you don't want to go.

Guess it depends on how these people are. If you can simply telll them you're on a low carb diet without them going nuts on you, then go. If the whole 'vacation' is going to be nothing but a low carb debate, then don't bother.

You said that they're already on your case for not eating 'normal".. Are they the typical anti low carbers...? If all they have in their house is high carb foods, then you're going to be stuck eating them..

You could bring some low carb bars and other foods just in case they don't have anything you'd eat, but If they're low carb bashers, then you'll get stuck being lectured on how bad it is..

Well to me it looks like you have done SUPER GREAT with this WOE, and have nothing to fear.

Part of this is a lifestyle change, which means you should be able to travel with your grandma, visit relatives, go on vacation, and do whatever you would do in real life.

I don't see why eating low carb should put a halt to things you want to do.

Now if you don't really want to go, or have other financial reasons to stay home, that is different, and you will need to explain this to your family I guess and hope they understand.

Otherwise I say don't give food the power over you so that it affects what you do in life. You have overcome your addiction and you should be confident that you will make the right choices. Nothing stops you from getting your own groceries while you are there to stock up the fridge with the foods you need to have on hand.

Good luck!

Hi el corazón,

A mother talking here. Checked your profile and saw that you are 5'6". 116 lbs is low for your height. You are actually underweight now. (For your height the recommended weight range is 118 - 156.) Maybe your family is concerned that you are losing too much. You have to make sure that you are not losing muscle or even worse, bone mass, in your effort to be slim.

Dr. Atkins says that once on maintenance, foods that we avoid while losing can be enjoyed in moderation. I think one example was a baked potato once a week. To make your relatives happy, have one slice of toast with eggs in the morning, or even half a muffin. Eats lots of salad at lunch and dinner but take a small portion of the carb of the moment and have a bite or two. You may be surprised when you don't gain anything. Happened to my DH when he hit goal. He now has one or two pieces of bread before dinner when we eat out and has even shared deserts (up to half!) without gaining and without having the cravings return. He is eating fruits now and not counting carbs, just avoiding bread (except out), cereal, potatos, pasta......

As a mother with a teenage daughter who doesn't get enough calcium or vitamins (just from not eating much - she never has been interested in food since she was little), I can guess where your family is coming from. They see you at a point where you have lost all the weight they think you need to. They may be concerned that you are not satisfied and may be creating long term health problems unintentionally. Even if they are driving you nuts, it's probably because they love you.

Go with Grandma and visit your relative and enjoy your visit. The food is secondary to the visit. Don't miss an opportunity to be with family. They don't come around that often.

El corazon, I know exactly how you feel. I am going away from Christmas and I sometimes feel like cancelling because I won't be able to control what I eat alot of the time. I am going to have to say I don't eat lot of stuff and I know my family will think I am overeacting and will be trying to force me to eat stuff but I will be strong.

You have reached your goal Congrats! I can't wait to be where you are. Go with Grandma and have a blast. You can do this!

Peace
red

p.s. How come you removed your stats?
