Default Diet fizzy drinks

Hi All

Hows it going everyone, I've just lost a stone in my introduction phase of the Atkins diet And my partner has lost 9 lbs during the same time, although she thinks it unfair that i'm loosing more weight then her, I'm really proud of her losing 9lbs and I keep trying to encourage her.

Our problems lie with drinking lost of water, i'm quite happy with it, but my partner is struggling, we've just bought the Atkins carb counter and it says that diet coke has 0 carbs, does that mean that diet lemonade has 0 carbs aswell.

Many Thanks

Triggsley

Thumbs up

Hi Dave

Congratulation on you and your partners weight loss during induction, well done.

I don't drink any fizzy drinks, but think that the answer to your question is that diet lemonade has no carbs. After all, all it is is flavoured water! My understanding is that the reason why you are not encouraged to drink diet drinks is for the citric acid in them and also the artificial sweetner. For some people aspartamene is a no-no and slows/stops weight loss.

By all means substitute diet drinks for some of your fluid intake, but there is no substitute for pure water, which is after all what a lot of the body is composed of.

My question is, regards to diet pop, are there any artificial sweetners you should totally avoid or are all diet pops ok? Lat time I did Atkins i only had diet caffine free coke, but now im wondering if i can have diet orange or Dr p too?

Hi Emma, welcome back

Do you have the Atkins book? This will tell you what sweetners should be avoided.
Some sweeteners may cause stalling in weight loss which is why they should be avoided. But that is easer said than done in this country.
I have been drinking mainly diet coke or diet Dr Pepper though i have had some other diet drinks and so far i haven't noticed any problems.

Ebbie, I do have the book but as i couldnt find a diet pop without the sweetners listed in it i didnt think they were allowed at all. So I think as long as have them in moderation i should be ok. At least this way if i stop loosing weight i can cut them out.

Thanks

Emma

Hi folks,

l also tend to drink mainly Diet Coke and the Sugar Free ranges from Asda & Morrisons without any problems myself although some others do.

Do watch out with the old Carbs bit. A bottle of Diet Coke shows per 100mls - 0.4 cals, 0g carbs. which then becomes 1 litre - 4cals, 0g carbs.

As 4Cals = 1g Carb then a Full 2 litre bottle has 2g Carbs in it. l still enjoy the odd bottle as a change to just plain water, but l now add 1 or 2g carbs onto my daily tally list to play it safe..

Hi Cath

Nice to see you found your way to the UK forum!

With respect, losing weight isn't the be all and end all of being healthy... and you were only just posting elsewhere that you're getting really bad headaches since starting the diet eight days ago.

Perhaps you might try to reconsider your "limit" of 2-3 glasses of water a day... that seems worryingly low to me.

Hi Cath

If what Urban Gypsy says is true I would certainly echo having a lot more than 2 to 3 glasses of water a day. The general opinion for everyone, not just those on Atkins, is that 8 glasses a day is what the body needs.
