I believe Altace is one medication that is prescribed to diabetics because it is thought to help preserve kidney function which would be a good thing in diabetics who are not well controlled since they are at high risk for kidney disease. Unfortunately, I didn't tolerate the "theapeutic dosage" of 10 mg. well and responded with dizziness and nausea for several days as well as my blood pressure getting too low (100/60), so 5 mg. was as high as I could take.
To answer your original question, yes. I have successfully gotten off my blood pressure medication going from a BP of 180/106 pre-medication (my doctor nearly had a stroke by proxy!) to 120/76 without it after. I've been low carbing for over 2 years, but have been off the Altace for over a year now.
Doc brought up my taking Altace again at my last visit (to protect kidney function) and I politely declined pointing out that my blood pressure is now normal without it and that I don't tolerate it well. I also pointed out that with an A1C of 5.3, I'm not likely to be developing kidney disease any time soon. He agreed.
