Default Is splenda (sucralose) TRULY good for us?

We all know aspartame, used in nutrasweet and virtually all sugar-free products has a host of undesirable effects.

However, just because aspartame is bad doesnt make sucralose safe.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...splenda+warning

I have heard splenda is partially absorbed by the body, and has caused in independant studies the following complications with rats:

· Shrunken thymus gland (up to 40% shrinkage)

· Enlarged liver and kidneys

· Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus

· Increased cecal weight

· Reduced growth rate

· Decreased red blood cell count

· Hyperplasia of the pelvis

· Extension of the pregnancy period

· Aborted pregnancy

· Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights

· Diarrhea

Well diarrhea is to be expected, since splenda just passes through the body, thus softening stools. But the claim that it is partially digestable, and the fact it is made with chlorine, on top of the lab results does have me worried.

No artificial sweetener is GOOD for you. You'd be better off without all of them. I think it's just a case of which ones are less bad than others.

Personally, I use lots of different ones (saccharin, cyclamate and splenda) as well as aspartame in soft drinks. This way I never really get a big dose of any individual one.

I'm with Robert - I hedge my bets, so to speak. I'm trying to wean myself onto stevia for my coffee, but I can't get below a half pack of splenda.

I have to wonder how much Splenda those rats were fed - the human equivalent of 50 LC cheesecakes?

If I recall that study I recall the rats were fed something like 40x what the FDA recommends for humans. If you just have a couple servings a day you should be fine. Besides, look at the food ingredient label of almost any food and see all of the icky stuff listed. I am sure splenda and other artificial sweeteners aren't any worse than many of those.

Just out of interest 'stevia' is banned in Britain and the Europe where it is believed to be dangerous!

Angry

It's always so reassuring when something that is allowed by one group of experts is banned by another.
