Default MSG - please help

I know that MSG is found almost everywhere. I know I am sensitive to MSG, but I usually only find out the hard way if a food has it. Can someone tell me which of these foods DEFINITELY have MSG? Telling me it might have MSG will not help me, because I know that. Thanks.

*Tofu - Nasoya brand; extra firm, firm, soft, silken
*Lite Tofu - Nasoya brand; firm, silken
*Tofu, Chinese Spice - Nasoya brand
*Tofu, Garlic & Onion - Nasoya brand
*Tofu - Fresh Tofu Inc. brand
*Baked Tofu - White Wave brand; Italian, Thai
*Smoked Turkey - any brand
*Cooked Turkey Slices - any brand

What other low-carb products do you know of that definitely have MSG? I'd like to know. Thank you to everyone who answers me.

Im in the same boat re: the msg.. its in alot of your frozen foods, salad dressings, only salad dressings I have found that dont have it is.. the Kraft three cheese dressing.also plain italian.. I think it is..
Beware of Chinese food also. unless you can request it be made without it.
Thats how I found out I was super sensitive to it. I found out that I was by eating some chinese food at our local Mall.
Most Campbells soups have it. you can read labels ( it is a pain to do this but.. sure saves alot of headaches and such with being sensitive to it..) its also in some deli sandwich meats.. and like Polish sausage.. i have found at Wegmans their brand doesnt have it in theirs..
Good Luck .. just keep reading ingredients.. Thats what I do..
take care
Deb

I've only been made aware of MSG in the last few years. In addition to Lonely's question, could someone tell me what exactly IS MSG and what is the reason for putting it in food? I always ask for no MSG in my chinese food, but honestly, I don't even know what it is. LOL

Thanks,
~Angi~

Hi, I'm not sure I understand, why don't you just check the ingredients listed on the package? MSG or monosodium glutamate can be listed under various names, here are a few:

enzyme modified,
anything fermented,
anything protein fortified,
anything ultra pasteurized,
autolyzed yeast,
barley malt,
broth,
bouillon,
calcium caseinate,
carrageen,
flavoring,
natural flavoring,
gelatin,
hydrolyzed oat flour,
hydrolyzed vegetable,
hydrolyzed protein,
malt extract maltodextrin,
natural flavors,
pectin,
plant protein extract,
potassium glutamate,
sodium caseinate,
soy protein,
soy sauce,
stock,
textured protein,
whey protein,
yeast extract,
yeast food.

Hope that helps!

Well, some quick research on the tofu's shows:

http://www.nasoya.com/nasoya/tofu.html

...since MSG is monosodium glutamate, and the ingredients don't list it, I'll go with no on the Tofu.

If you had some specific brands on the meats, I'm sure you could find what you're looking for.

Good luck!

Mor-nu brand lite tofu has no msg or carbs. The baked items you might stay away from due to sodium and msg, but if you get a good tofu it shouldn't have anything but water, tofu, and some kind of preservative.

I tried the Italian white wave tofu and really liked it. It has extreamly high sodium though and the soy sauce used has wheat

I know that MSG can be referred to by so many euphimisms on labels. One of the terms used is "NATURAL FLAVORING," and it is almost impossible to find a food that doesn't say "natural flavors" somewhere in the ingredients! That's why I asked - is there anyone who really did their research and knows for sure?

The tofu I have found that has the least carbs have a lot more than two ingredients! Note the following:

The Nasoya Lite Tofu has zero carbs. The ingredients:
water,
organic whole soybeans,
isolated soy protein, (that one worries me)
tricalcium phosphate,
calcium sulfate,
magnesium chloride,
vitamin E acetate,
vitamin A acetate,
vitamin D2,
vitamin B12

Nasoya Onion & Garlic Tofu has 1 net carb per quarter pkg. Ingredients:
water,
organic whole soybeans,
magnesium chloride,
natural flavors with extractives of tumeric,
salt

Nasoya Firm Tofu has 1 net gram of carbs per fifth pkg. Ingrediets:
water,
organic whole soybeans,
calcium sulfate,
magnesium chloride

Fresh Tofu Inc. tofu has 2 net carbs per fifth pkg. and 3 ingredients:
water,
organic soybeans,
nigari (a natural coagulent)

What do you say? It would be a pity to waste all that tofu out of doubt. I really stocked up the other day!

Thanks.

Just in case I could squeeze the info out of the Nasoya company itself, I contacted them. (Nasoya and Vitasoy are the same co.) But who knows if they'll tell me the truth? I'll let you know the outcome!

The one with "natural flavors" is the only one you MIGHT have to worry about.

http://www.soyinfo.com/soydefs.shtml

I'm extremely sensitive to MSG and nitrates/nitrites and I do not have problems with plain tofu.

Jinx

PS I buy lotsa White Wave and I have never had any problems. THey are all about au natural
