Default Camping Food

Hello everyone!

We're planning a big camping trip this summer and I want to be Atkins-prepared.

Although we'll have a cooler, there will be times when keeping meat will be difficult - some days we'll be out in the back country areas and I'm not sure how easy it will be to keep things cold.

I'm planning to bring Atkins bars and shakes, canned tuna, vienna sausages, pepperoni, cheese sticks, nuts and raw veggies, but other than that, I can't think of any good foods to bring along. Most of these foods are pretty salty, but without good refrigeration I guess that's the only way to keep things from going bad.

Any suggestions? Please help! Thank you so much!

This was a timely thread...I'm also going camping this weekend. I'm taking a bunch of hardboiled eggs, precooked sausage patties, a few bars and a container of keto shake mix. I also want to make up a batch of low carb, all meat chili in the crockpot to freeze and take too. I also am going to bring some Hersheys SF dark chocolate in case some cravings hit. I'm also throwing some cans of tuna, chicken and corned beef.

yes indeed...perfect timing for this subject. I'm going in 2 weeks and I'm planning on eating burgers and dogs...without the buns. String cheese and bars for snacks. Atkins seems perfect for camping, since you mostly grill meat while doing it. I just have to try and control the beer intake. That's a hard thing to do while camping in the Wisconsin northwoods...

beef jerky! If you buy the storebought kind, you have to watch for hidden carbs, but if you make your own, you can make it carb free!

When I was a kid, camping was about the only time we ate mostly LC. Yes there was the occasional samwich or cereal, but for the most part it was LC. For dinner we would fry up any fish we caught, or my dad would have a steak as he hated fish. For breakfast we would fry eggs and bacon on a hot rock by the fire. There is also hot dogs on a stick, trail mix, and so on. I guess we did have chips, but nuts can be put in place of those.

Funny, but for us, camping was always a high-carb deal! We'd pack things like dried rice dishes and chili mixes. Breakfast was always pancakes or bagels or something easy.

Can you make beef jerky without a food dehydrator? I'd love to bring some along, but don't know how to make it in a regular oven.

Thanks for the ideas!

Pam

Put the marinated meat on a cookie sheet or drape it over an oven rack with a cookie sheet on the lower rack, and leave it in a warm oven (about 200F) overnight or longer.

Hi, i just went camping memorial weekend, before we left though, i bought a 5 day, 50 quart cooler at walmart for $24.00. It will keep meat and dairy products cold for that length of time. put enough ice in there to surround all your food.. it worked really good. i packed in steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, spare ribs, chicken. and i brought along a few of the morning start atkin bars, the choc chip ones. for a snack...
good luck!

Thanks for some great ideas! I too am going camping this weekend. The jerky is in the dehydrator as we speak! My only regret will be no s'mores...

Well, Virgo, I suppose an Atkins S'mores bar just doesn't cut it sometimes, does it?

Check the labels on the cured meats (sausages, hot dogs, jerky) for sugar or corn syrup.

Kipper snacks or sardines might be a good choice...I enjoy them with scrambled eggs. Of course, nothing beats freshly-caught trout.

Walnuts are also a good portable LC snack food.
