That depends. But here is a scientific breakdown of number of calories to lbs of fat. It takes 3500 extra calories for your body to store 1lb of fat. Hence, you need to have a caloric deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1lb of fat.
But for some reason with the Atkins diet, I do not find this to be true. Your body burns fat at a rapid rate while in ketosis. The protein you eat is absorebed by the muscles to keep the body from using muscle tissue for nourishment.
I hope this helps

That is because in Ketosis, your body cannot produce new fat. Thus, anything you eat (other than carbs) is usually wasted...as in excreted by sweat, exhaling, or going to the bathroom. I have never lost more than 3 pounds in a day and that only happened a few times.
But, when I eat the Chicken Soup at a certain restraunt, I put on 5-8 pounds overnight...The weight comes back off in a few days...so, it has to be mostly water weight. But, 5-8 pounds weight gain overnight is very discouraging.
IMO, there is another factor...how often and how much you go to the bathroom. You may break down fat at a certain rate...but, your body has to get rid of that fat. You can only get rid of so much through sweat and breath. The rest...goes out the other end. For example, if you go a day without going to the bathroom...you won't lose much. But, if the next day you go 20 times, you are gonna have a woosh, because two days weight has come off on the second day.
Also, I thought it was 2000 calories per pound of fat ??? That would seem to make more sense. 4000 calories burned in a day would be 2 pounds a day. But, you aren't 100% efficient...your body will burn some dietary fat and protein, reducing that number to the more comon 1/2 pound - 1 pound range. This also explains why you lose faster, the fatter you are...as you need more energy to do everyday tasks. Hence, you burn more fat for energy. That is probably also why weight loss slows down over time.
