Willett says lower carbs
I don't know if this has been posted before. It's an ABC News interview with Walter Willett, head of the Harvard School of Public Health's department of nutrition. I found it linked from Laura Richards's site. In it he advises a low-carb diet. He also says some positive things about Atkins.
Beware, however, that he is anti-saturated fat. The science supporting his position is weak. (See the Cholesterol section for links to articles by Kendrick and Ravnskov.) Saturated fat has not been shown to raise cholesterol levels or cause heart disease or cancer. Our paleolithic ancestors ate plenty of saturated fats when they consumed the organs of animals. The muscle of those animals were lean, but not the brains, livers, etc. Moreover, a typical steak is not mostly saturated fat. Over half is monounsaturated fat, the kind Willett recommends. Much of the saturated fat is stearic acid, an anti-oxidant.
