I haven't made my own butter for years, but I have done it several ways. My favorite was in a kitchenaid mixer with the regular paddle attachment. It still takes about 20 minutes but the machine does the hard work! You still have to press it a bit to get the last of the whey out but that's not too bad. I've heard that a food processor works too but haven't tried it my self.
