Question Questions for Doctor during next physical

Hi Folks:

I'm a regular at the yearly gyn visits, but I've only ever had one physical at the regular old doctor before & wasn't really happy with the whole thing. He pretty much lead me in like a cow, asked me if I smoke, and nudged me out the door. Now that I'm lc'ing I figured I should get a real physical to make sure things are going well from year to year.

My questions are:
  1. From a low-carber perspective, what types of tests should I ask for.
What are the most significant tests/questions for a low-carber?
I am on an HMO so I can't exactly shop around a lot for a doctor. What if she gives me a bunch of heck over the low-carb thing? How have other people handled this conflict with their doctors?

Thanks much -- Ginger in Maryland

Firstly, don't say low carb if you feel the Dr. would frown. Say that you are cutting out sugars and starches and processed foods and trying to eat lean meat and lots of vegetables and salad. And if you want dessert, you have some fruit.

Look in the Atkins or Eades books for their lists of pre-plan tests to have.
Here are some quick suggestions :
blood pressure (obvious)
Cholesterol: total, and preferably both HDL & LDL & ratio
Triglycerides
Thyroid: TSH but ask for T3 & T4 as well

She'll probably do a BUN & creatinin (kidney function) and possibly liver function, hemoglobin & others since you have no record or baseline.
