Default Shrimp Chips

Does anyone have any nutritional information about these? I read somewhere that they're made from dried shrimp and egg whites, which implies that they're low-carb...

For those of you who aren't familiar with this treat, they're the puffy, often colourful "chips" (crisps) that are served with Peking Duck at Chinese restaurants. My mother used to make them when we were little. When you buy them, they look like translucent poker chips. You drop them in hot oil and like magic, they puff up into crispy chips, perfect for dipping. Texture-wise, they're like pork rinds, only they're not quite as salty, if memory serves me correctly, and they don't taste quite as greasy/porky.

The next time I'm at an Asian grocery store, I'm going to take a look for them.

***UPDATE***

Well, I took another look around and it looks like these are made with tapioca flour, which are high in carbs. Too bad. I'm still going to see if I can find some nutritional information on them the next time I go for Asian groceries.

Hi

In the UK we call them 'Prawn Crackers'. I have a pack here from a local Chinese supermarket (Pigeon Brand).

The ingredients are listed as: Starch, Prawn Meat and Salt

1oz (28.3g) Serving size:
105 calories per serving

total fat 1g
sodium 300mg
total carb 23g
fibre 0g
sugar 1g
protein 0g

I guess I better chuck this pack in the bin!

Hi Mr. Blobby, LOL!! I had to chuckle at your name. I had a Mr. Blobby key chain for ages and lost it.! Too bad about prawn chips eh? I'm wondering what would happen if one deep fried stiff egg whites and then tried to flavour them. I do have microwave popcorn (redenbachers) which is only 11 grm. in 3 cups and you can add butter. Once in a while I make this my main carbs for the day plus my veg and/salad and I'm still under 20 (carbs that is!!)
How far N.W. are you? I'm from Hounslow nr. Heathrow airport originally.
Got any other ideas??
Pippa
