Default Trans Fat Banned

Im reading my gazette today and it says Canada will be the 2nd country to banned Trans Fat. So I guess we wont be seeing much junk food anymore on shelves or from other countries. Meaning if other countries want to sell to Canada, they will have to take the trans fat out and label it. Well I'm glad they are doing it. At least it will be one thing less to worry about in our food and especially for our kids. Cause its mainly in crackers, cereals, cookies, french fries etc. etc. Denmark is the first country that is already in force. Well I guess if they survied so will we and the rest of the world if we all put it in force. After all, its for our health.

I think this thread will likely end up in the war zone!

While I agree that trans fats are evil, how much more regulation does Canada need? Next year, Health Canada is implementing a ban on labelling foods "low carb". What next?

This is way too "Big Brother" for me.

Several more in my eyes cause unfortunately millions of poeple still have'nt a clue when it comes to healthy eating, and the effects of eating all that "junk" costs al of us.

Sadly the big companies have ruined this for themselves, I still do not trust what they claim to be the "net carb", bottom line we are being ripped off big time by the cost of some of these products being sold to the" low carb" market when several of them have been around for years just labelled "no sugar".

Many of us can read and decifer for ourselfves, but far too many more can not and the companies are making big bucks on that.
Bottom line, eat real food, the odd n/s treat is fine.

Cheers Kathy

I would have to agree with Kathy on that. They are really making the BIG bucks and often some have no choice and buy their product and we are getting riped off. It has become billions of dollars profit to be on diets today. They sure pocket all of our money and laughing to the banks. All the money we put in for diets and when you think of kids or other countries cant even have one decent meal in a week and a lot are your own neighbours and you dont even know it. So the best way is to buy fresh foods and make it from scratch if possible. All these bars, frozen LC well you know what i mean, we can all learn to make it ourselves and put that extra money towards other important stuff we need in our lives.

That's great news! I think it's important that people be more informed about what they are eating and better yet what they're feeding their kids. I'm all for it.

What the paper says is this:

"The motion, which will come to a vote Tuesday, calls for regulation or legislation to ban trans fats, as urged by a task force involving the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Such a ban would force all processed food manufacturers, including foreign importers, to eliminate the substance or remove their product from Canadian shelves."

This does not mean that it has passed. Also the vote will be for the regulation or legislation to ban trans fat. This is a far cry from actually banning it outright. They will do studies, draft legislation and drag it out for quite a while. On the positive side, at least they are on the right track this time.

the way i read it looks positive and im sure it wont be that long cause we all know living in canada, they are very strick with anything thats not good for health wise like medication that is approve in USA....we all know either we cant get it here or its still on hold cause they dont think its good enough...its so hard to get anything here cause of all the inspections....we had a ship load a few years ago of strawberries from USA and the port of montreal shipped it back cause it didnt respect the amount of pestiside in them...it was even on the program 20/20..so i doubt its going to be too long...anyhow, the more countries that gets involved the better for all of us

Even if the legislation does not pass, the new food labeling regulations that go into effect January 1 require the listing of trans fat on the labels. I believe that there is a year before mandatory compliance.
