Default What's up with these nuts

Hello all,

I was recently at the grocery store and was looking at the nutritional info on several bags of nuts.

Some of them listed 3 g of carbs and 3 g of fiber, (0 net carbs?) some had 4 g of carbs and 3 g of fiber, and one even listed the counts as 3 g total carbs and 4 g of fiber, (minus 1 net carbs?).

Is this possible or are the rules for rounding on food labels so loose that the manufacturers can round one number up or one number down?

Lots of nuts are very low in net carbs, and very high in nutrition.

Good oils, and good minerals. Plus you get to do some hefty chewing, which I find to be very satisfying. Sometimes the very dense, fat foods we eat don't give you much chance to chew and work on the food you are eating.

Look up the specific nuts you are concerned about on FitDay or some other nutrient site, if you have doubts about the labeling.

Dr. Atkins was quite high on nuts and tended to eat quite a few himself. I believe his favorites were Macadamia, but I find that Pecans and whole Almonds are also very satisfying. Sometimes I like to eat Walnuts too.

Keep on, keepn' on!

It is possible that th enuts were produced and labelled in the Europian Union or somewhere which uses the same system as we do. In this case the fibre has already been deducted so you can't do the sum again! Thus the ones which seem to have -4 carbs actually have 3 grams of effective carbs and 4 grams of fibre thus making 7 in total. These figures would also seem to be much closer to the truth.
America, as always, has it's own way of doing things!

Yes! They can round off their numbers. And if they have less than a certain amount of carbs (or fat) per serving then they can say it's zero. So if they make the serving very small then they can be claiming zero carbs for something that actually has quite a lot of carbs percentage-wise.

Peanuts are generally 5/2 or 7/3 per serving...That is 5-7g Total Carbs and 2-3g of Fiber for 3-4g Net Carbs. If they are labelled as 3-4 Carbs, the Fiber's been Pre-Deducted.

Are they allowed to do that?

There are no laws regarding pre-deducting fiber. It makes reading labels very difficult. All nuts have carbs. Unfortunately you really have to rely on a carb counter program or book rather than the label due to manufacturer rounding, not counting carb counts under 1 gram , an pre-subtracting fiber.
