Default Ketones

Hi all, I want to understand better the whole Ketone thing. I have read the book, but am not sure it really answers my questions.

Since starting Atkins 2 weeks ago I have been showing moderate to dark ketones.

I drink well over 12 glasses of water a day, so am not dehydrated.

Does this mean that I'm eating too much fat?

Is it better to be light pink, rather than dark?

does this mean I can eat more carbs, up to the point where my ketones are showing as small to trace?

Will that mean I lose weight slower?

Thanks
Luscious

Hi Luscious,

It's hard to know exactly why your ketostix are reading moderate to dark. What I do know though, is that it's not really that important. In fact IMHO testing for ketones is a waste of time and money.

The stix may be dark simply because you are eating a lot of fat (not too much, just a lot ) or it may well be that you are burning lots of fat.

It doesn't necessarily mean you can eat more carbs though. If you are losing well (as I believe you are ), I'd carry on exactly as you are.

If you go to Low Carb Tips (on the orange bar at the top of the screen) you'll see an excellent article called Ketosis and Ketone Test Strips that will explain more.

Cheers.

Roz

No, but depending on when you test, you may be showing dietary fat being burned. The best time for an accurate reading is in the morning, before eating.

_____ No, if it registers ANY color, you're in ketosis, one color isn't better than the other.

does this mean I can eat more carbs, up to the point where my ketones are showing as small to trace?------ it may lighten as you gradually follow the cycle of Atkins, and progress to OWL and Pre-maintanance, but I wouldn't use it as a liscense to move my carb level up in and of itself.

Will that mean I lose weight slower?------ as you add carbs your weight loss will slow. This is the design of Atkins, it helps prepare you to maintain your loss by leading you to determine the amount of carbs you'll be able to eat and not re-gain your weight.

Thanks
Luscious

Hope this helps. Also, go up to the orange bar at the top of the page and click on "Low Carb Tips". This will lead you to an article all about the test strips.
