Default The low down on sugars

Hi

Would someone please connect me to a place where I can thoroughly educate myself about all of these sugar options?

I know there's a link here about sugar alcohols, I read that...but I know there are many more. Sucrose, dextrose, sucralose...Oh heck...there's a bunch!!! I need to know about them. Today, I looked at some sausages, and there was dextrose, which I knew was sugar, but not more about it.

Anyone have any helpful links or studies?

Also, there's a name for Splenda type sugar that I can have, what is it?

Do most of you find that the sugar alcohols cause you to stall? I recently picked up the Russell Stover candies and Pure Delite chocolate bars, (which I would use sparingly).

Thanks for your help
I need to get educated!!!

Ann

I found a fun page! Sugarweb- Types of Sugar

To answer your specific questions:
1) Sucrose- extracted from sugar cane
2) Dextrose- corn sugar
3) Sucralose- a product made from sugar, but is low calorie (aka Splenda!)

Here's a helpful hint too. You can determine where sugar alcohols are derived from by the prefix. Maltitol is from malt sugar, lactitol from milk sugar (aka lactose), etc.

Hope that helps!

That's a great web page, THANK YOU!!! I smiled when I saw your post...I have been posting questions all the heck OVER these forums...and you seem to always be there with intelligent helpful answers. Thank you VERY much :-) (Hey, give me a call when you come out to the Hamptons...and I'll buy you a drink!!!)

OK..so here's the next question...according the the Atkins plan, and under close scrutiny as to how my body reacts, I can have Splenda and the sugar alcohols, is that right?
