Default What carbs Tesco's soya milk?

Hi everyone,

When I lived in England I used to use Tesco's own brand soya milk in tea and coffee. It actually tastes like white wash but you get used to it!
Unless I am mistaken, and I may be, it is listed as zero carbs.

Now I live in Belarus and I managed to buy some dried soya milk. Same awful taste but this stuff has the same amount of carbs as soya flour.

So, where lies the truth? How many carbs does soya milk have? Is it worth bringing a few litres of the Tesco's stuff back after Xmas or just use the local product?

Anyone any ideas or info?

P.S. I don't mind ordinary milk or cream but dairy seems to make me stall.

Love to all back in dear old Blighty.

Robert

Hi Robert

I am sure that it is difficult getting similar products in other countries. I have just looked at the Tesco website, but they give no nutritonal info for Soya drink. Here is the info for what I assume is the same type of product which you will see has 3g per 100 ml.

Provamel Soya Fresh 1 Litre
Made from whole soya beans, sourced from non-GMO soya bean plantations, with full traceability, tested by independent labs and processed without use of chemicals. Manufactured and packed in a dairy free environment. Approved by the Family Heart Association as part of a healthy balanced diet. Soya Fresh- Tastes GREAT in tea. The delicious taste of Soya Fresh is just right for every occasion. Its natural flavour provides the perfect complement to tea, without overpowering your drink. Soya Fresh can also be enjoyed: * Straight from the fridge. * Poured over cereal. * Instead of dairy milk in cooking. It is not a long-life product. * Low in saturated fat. * Non-GMO soya beans. * Suitable for vegetarians/vegans. * Free from preservatives & colourings. * Low in fat. * Gluten free. * Lactose free. There are

Nutritional Information

I note it contains apple extract and that will probably the main source of carbs.

I can not find the details for soya flour on the site. Don't forget that when you make it up then you dilute it with water and thus the carb content reduces anyway. So work it out. The above suggests a 7% solution of the powder. How many carbs is that?

I would not have thought you would be drinking that much a day and thus the carbs from it will not add significantly to your daily total.

Every success.

Smile Mnay thanks Anne.

Thanks Anne

What a lot of information! Well it is lower than cow's milk. I also think the carbs come from the apple extract - I distnctly remembe the Tesco's own one being carb free. (And having a taste which, shall we say 'takes getting used to' .

Problem is being a Brit I really like milk in my tea!

I'll wotk out if it's worthwhile drinking soya milk or just stick to the normal stuff but try and drink less of it.

I wish someone would make a carb free whitener. Now that's something to search for when I'm home at Xmas.

Greetings from Belarus...and thanks once more.

Robert

Hi Robert,
I suspect ann's right re apple juice as I have sweetened soya milk varities with higher carb than tesco's own. What i use and i suspect you used before is Tesco's value soya milk unsweetened (white tetra pack with blue stipes)

250ml 100ml
energy 65kcal 26kcal
carb 0.5g 0.2g
sugars 0.3g 0.1g
Protien 7g 2.8g
fat 4g 1.6g
sat fat 0.5g 0.2
fibre 2.3g 0.9g

I have tried tea with soya milk but do'nt think its worth the lower carbs How long does it take to get used to it ?
Hope this helps
Ash

Hi Ascombe

Yea, that's the stuff. When I leave Tescos nearly everything has blue and white stripes!

It's foul in tea isn't it

I use to use it, but put in just a drop of double cream on top. Same with coffee. If you just drink it (yes, I tried! ) a sweetener improves it a lot!

It's OK in soya pancakes and other things like that though.

Thanks Ash.

All the best from a wet and rainy Belarus.

Robert

Exclamation Holland and Barrett Soya Milk

Hi Robert

Even more on the soya milk saga. I went into Holland and Barret yesterday and saw that they had soya milk. Mind you, its about £1 a litre. There's was 0.6 carbs per 100 ml. I'd be interested to know what the difference is between Tesco's and H & B. Perhaps it is a concentration thing!

Its rather wet over here at the moment as well!

Smile Soya Milk Saga

Thanks Anne,

I think some manufacterors add something to make it as sweet as cow's milk.

I have seen on this board that lactose free milk which you can buy in America has about the same carbs as the unadulterated stuff.

I think they take out the lactose and put in another sugar to preserve the sweetness.

I wish someone would produce real lactose free milk

I looked at some dried stuff one of my colleagues has brought back from England. Thr powder is 26 percent carbs and is full of corn syrop!

Why do they do these things?

Love to all back in the motherland!

Robert

Hi Robert,

As you haven't got a journal, thought I'd slip this in here - there was an article in the Independant last week about how they are trying to turn Belarus into a tourism area - Minsk in particular. As I'm sure you can imagine, they were not particularly complimentary. Anyway, as I saw that you are currently living there, I thought it might be of interest!

Hi Demi,

Thanks for the info. Belarus always gets a bad press. I don't know why. It's safer and cleaner than London. It had grand buildings, wide tree lined avenues and the people are great. Tourist centre - I don't think so though - no ancient buildings.

It also has 3 low carbers that I know of!!!

Regards,

Robert.

Regarding the differences between the nutri. info. for the soya milk from tescos (blue and white stripe stuff) and other brands such as Holland and Barrett. I've tried both of these and the tescos one is just more watery and less creamy, so i pressume that it has less soya beans in it and thus a lower carb count.

It tastes like it was made by the devil himself, but you soon get used to it.

(I try to alternate it with double cream, which makes the cream taste so much creamyer and more like your tradtional cuppa, well sort of. Obviously better in coffee than tea.)

When I get down to my maintenace weight I'm gonna go back on the milk but the full fat stuff, no messinmg about with the semi skimmed, or the white wash they call fully skimmed.

anyway enough waffling, and going off on a tangent,

Bungle

Thanks Bungle,

And everyone who replied to this thread. Reckon I'll trest myself to a few cartons of the blue and white Tesco's stuff to take back to Belarus when I come over at Xmas.

I already use normal full cream milk here Bungle (and i'm not on maintainance, just OWL.) I just use a 50mg vodka glass to measure it out in and then allow 2g on my daily allowance.

I've never figured out why Dr Atkins allows cream but not milk - they both have about 4g per 100. I suppose you use less cream.

Greeting to everyone from beautiful Belarus (I found and read the article Demi - now I'm going to get the advanced students in the school I work in to read it write letters to the Independant defending their motherland.)

Love to all in England (the land of Boots diabetic chocolate.)

Robert
