Default Where to find good Beef Jerky

I've been looking for some Beef Jerky that isn't loaded with sugar and other bad things and have had zero luck. Today I hit an all-time low - found some that actually had blazened across the label, "Made with devitalized wheat protein" Now doesn't THAT just sound yummy and nutritious!

Anyone know of any decent LC brands?

That's an idea. Any pointers on a good way to do it? If I get really interested I'll do a search and see what I turn up, but if you have a way to do it without needing any special gadgets that would be great.

Thanks.

I order mine from the web--www.jerkyusa.com No sugar. It took me awhile to get the courage to order beef jerky from a website but it was very good and I have ordered several times.

Thanks - I'll probably give the website a try.

I'm not interested in buying a dehydrator - at least not at the present time. I know it can be done without one, but I'm not interested in setting up a smoke house, either.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys and gals!

I just use my oven.

I cut the vension 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch thick. Coat each side with a mix of black/red pepper, salt, onion powder and garlic powder. I cover the bottom rack with either foil or a large pan (easier to clean up if it drips). I lay the strips over the other two racks, set the oven for 350, bake for 45 mins to kill any icky stuff, then lower it to 150 for 4-6 hours depending on how dry you like it.

I usually set this up to run over night.

Pretty easy and zero sugar. Plus you can make it the way you like it....you can adjust the seasonings to your own taste this way. Want a smokey flavor? Try adding some of that liquid smoke in a bottle. Instead of sprinkling it I would very very lightly brush it on.

Cool

wbahn,

You can use any recipe you desire as a marinade, and then put it in your oven at 150 degrees (or at your lowest setting). Just test it after a while to see how dry you want it.

The drying time depends also on how thin you cut your meat also.

Hope this helps!!

Smile Yum!

Mark (szar),
Do you know if the Hot jerky or the Jalapeno jerky has any carbs? I e-mailed the website and I am waiting for a response. I will post here if I find out.

Thank you very much for the website!

Julie

Website responded that there are no carbs or sugar in the mild, hot or jalapeno! I can't wait to order!

Thanks again!

health food stores that carry meat will have sugar-free jerky. I think, bill, that there may be some version of the semi-national chain Wild Oats around you. (check their website at wildoats.com) Their beef jerky is $19.99 per pound....which is why I tend to make my own in the oven! Though I have run in there starved a couple times and asked for two or three pieces--my version of emergency convenience store food.

Default beef jerky recipe

I have posted my recipe on the forum at:

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...&threadid=38573

I make mine in the oven too. It's really very easy. I'm going to make another batch just as soon as the price of London broil comes back down.

Thanks, Deb - I think I'll give it a try in a few weeks.

Yeah, we have Wild Oats here - in fact there is one on the way between work and home. But, man are they ever proud of their stuff. When I was looking at buying Udo's Oil, I found it at Vitamin Cottage for $15 for a 17 oz bottle. That's their normal price and I thought that was pretty steep so I called Wild Oats and they had it "on special" for $19. It's regularly $22! So hearing that they have jerky for $20/# is not surprising.

For carb free beef jerky I just go to my local butcher/deli shop.... owned by a European couple who make ALL their own sausages and jerky... no fillers, sugars, starches etc.... just meat and spices!! Great stuff!!

Bar X brand, made here in Albuquerque, has two ingredients: beef, salt. I can buy it at a reasonable price at Costco but I don't know if it's available at Costco elsewhere. The company phone number is on the label, so now I have an excuse to go buy another big bag -- to help you out.

Lowcarbjo,

What is the name of the deli/butcher that you go to? I also live in the Vancouver area and would love to know of a good place to get sausage, jerky, etc.

Theresa
