Default Will a low carb diet improve creatinine levels

I believe that a low carb diet is not recommended for anyone with "kidney disease". Question is, if creatinine level is slightly high (at 87, normal being 85) could the Atkins diet help lower that level? Or would it be dangerous?

Creatinine is a by-product of protein metabolism .. so if your levels are elevated then you would need to restrict your protein intake to whatever level your dr. has prescribed. Otherwise, eating low-carbs and higher fat would be ok, and not harmful.

However .. there may be other nutritional restrictions too .. such as magnesium, potassium and salt (sodium). It would be a good idea to discuss this all with your dr.

Without knowing the reason for your kidney problem and elevated creatinine, it's hard to say if reducing carbs and controlling insulin would "fix" anything. However, if the kidney disease is due to diabetes, there's a good chance that in fact low-carbing would indeed be helpful and has been known to reverse the nephropathy caused by poorly controlled blood sugars.
