hi Korry,

The caution against iron supplements is directed mostly to older adults. There were some studies done in the mid-90's which showed increased risk of heart and blood vessel disease when stored iron levels were high (in men over 60). However, more recent studies have not been able to duplicate those results, and other studies have shown the exact opposite to be true .. higher iron levels were protective.

There's more information about this subject posted here.

In general, if you're young, and esp. female, but also if you're engaged in vigorous exercise .. you would be wise to ensure adequate iron intake. Vitamin C enhances absorption of iron.

Doreen

I take Iron supplements because I was anemic before going on the diet. I always wondered why they had that about the Iron not in the vitamins too.

Eating red meat is not a guarantee that you're getting sufficient iron from the diet. The daily requirement is 15mg for men and older women, 18mg for pre-menopausal women. An 8 oz lean steak provides 6mg, a large egg (yolk) only 1.6mg. The type of iron found in many vegetables isn't very well absorbed.

To supplement or not is one of those "gray areas" ... It's likely not a concern if you're younger or engaged in vigorous exercise. If you're over 50 and you're concerned about heart and blood vessel health - don't guess. Ask your doctor to check your stored iron levels .. it's a simple blood test called "serum ferritin". Then you'll know for sure.
