Default Calculating Nutrients (Fat)

Both the USDA db and the fitday.com db list for each food you look up, saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and then a 'total' for the fat.

Neither add up. The total is always more than the three added together. So far it seems to be a little more in the usda than the fitday db, but in both cases, even if I 'round up' the numbers to the last place they provide, it still doesn't come out to the same # as the total.

Is there some OTHER kind(s) of fat that is in there but not broken out, so it shows up in the total above and beyond the sum of those three? I had made that a calculated column in my spreadsheet, just to save a little typing, but it never comes out to the same 'total' fat# as the db source.

Anybody have a clue?

Thanks tons.

PJ

Hey PJ: I'm clueless myself with the "calculated totals" on fitday...especially their carb totals (the chart says one thing and at the bottom of the page where it lists nutrients it's always way more). I've decided not to worry about it as long as the numbers are within a targeted range and I stay in the middle of that range. Otherwise I'd drive myself nuts and go reach for a cookie.

Sometimes I think these guys aren't really sure themselves...look how long it took them to start even thinking about investigating the health effects of LCing! (See Time Mag Sept 2nd 2002--they had an article titled Low Fat vs. Low Carb...upshot is the brains that be want to study Dr. Atkins' success and find out why it's so successful *duh*)

Congrats on the lifting weights program. I'm sorely tempted to start it myself as an alternative to walking/marching up stairs. I have tried to start walking (with hubby) and got up to 1/2 mile in 20 minutes (this was preAtkins though) then he had some minor surgery and we quit. He's recovered now so we need to start back (I think the dog misses it!) We have stairs in the house, too...seven steps, a landing then seven more steps and my daughter suggested that as another means of exercise. She said go up and down them for five minutes...cripes, I lasted two trips (up and down twice) and had to rest. And this was just walking up and down the steps!! *sigh* I like the sound of your weight training much better...I will be looking forward to hearing about your success, too!!
