Question Worst foods

Whadya think of this?

So difficult for me to know having such up and down BS, but one food I really clocked as being bad was pizza . Even the wholemeal, organic, home made variety. Seems to be far worst than just eating the equivalent in bread. I wonder if this is to do with something about the combination of ingredients? More specifically, I wonder if it's to do with protein/carb combining? I'm veggie so I'm talking about cheese and veg pizza, if that's significant.

Anyone else noticed this out of proportion (considering the normal effect you'd expect from the carbs) with pizza or any other particularly bad foods for BS?

Not seen this discussed anywhere else, but posting it here as the diabetic angle is most important for me.

Chris

I haven't had pizza in a real long time. I ate is so much in college that I was finally sick of it. I'm sure it would send my BG through the roof. You might be onto something about the combo of fat and carbs. Maybe someone else has some experience with this.

To be honest, I am so afraid that my BG will go up and stay up that I try very few things that even have the possibility of raising BGL. Maybe after I have lived with testing for a while I will feel differently, but for now I am on the LowCarb wagon.

Yeah, pizza for sure. Of course there's a ton of carbs in the white flour crust, but cooked down tomatoes have a ton of carbs also. Worse than that, I think lots of sauces have added sugar, to simulate the "vine ripened" tomato taste, or just to pander to our national appetite for sweet. Even the cheese has some. Put them together and its lethal. If you are lucky, the cheese and toppings will have enough fat to slow down the absorption of the carbs a bit, but its still bad. Baked potatoes are killers also. Fast food burgers, with lots of white bread and ketchup and sugar in the "secret sauces" and of course "sweet and sour" dishes at chinese restaurants. Rice is bad for me, doesn't seem so outrageous to some. Which brings up a question - the glycemic indexes, as far as I know, are compiled by checking the post-meal blood sugars of healthy normal people. So what happens for diabetic, overweight, insulin-resistant people? I suspect the results will be similar, but perhaps more pronounced.Bill

I hadn't realised cooked toms were so bad, that could well be the icing on the cake for my pizza

Sauce was usually pure tom puree, olive oil and herbs spread on the base. Second layer of fried veggies with a topping of mozzerella, other cheeses and olives. No added sweetner whatsoever. Generally a lavish amount of it all.

I've been using tom puree in other meals too, so thanks for that

The combo I was thinking about as being a multiplier was the carb/protein one, as in the food combining "theory".

The deep dish pizza quiche in the recipe section of this forum is a very good substitute for pizza made with a flour crust.

I tried one pizza from the recope board here. It had creme cheese and eggs in the crust. It was awesome and my family loved it. As a matter of fact, I think I will make it tonight! Then I can have cold pizza for breakfast!

Absolutely nothing else spikes my blood sugar like pizza does. Not even french fries, or a Big Mac. There's some kind of synergy there between this particular combination of ingredients which causes it to raise blood sugar far in excess of what one would compute based solely on the sum of the parts.

If my blood sugar is 85 before I eat even one piece of thin crust pizza, and I don't eat the rim, just the thin flat part, my bg will read at least 145 within 15 minutes. And that's just for one piece. I shudder to think what my blood sugar must have been after eating an entire pie, which I used to do quite regularly.

Needless to say, this poison has been completely eliminated from my diet for a long time now.

Actually, it does add up to the sum of the parts:

BG 145 minus BG 85 = 60 point rise. Since each gram of carb raises BG's by 5 points, 60/5 = 12 grams of carbs.

The crust and pizza sauce (tomato sauce, SUGAR, and spices) can easily have 12 grams of carbs.

Most people forget about all the SUGAR in pizza sauce, because the acidity masks the sweetness.

Not mine. I still have enough Type I response (most of the time) so that mine only goes up 1-3 mg/dl/gram. I suspect that there's a lot more than 12 grams in almost any slice of pizza. It still raises my bg more than a comparably sized brick of birthday cake, frosting and all. Pizza is THE WORST thing I can possibly eat. THE WORST. Banished forever.

Default pizza

there seems to be a consensus that pizza does dramatic things to blood sugar. Wonder if that's why its so popular? As I remember, having high blood sugars was not unpleasant, sort of a heavy dreamy feeling. Hypoglycemia on the other hand was really nasty. Maybe pizza promotes that sort of comatose feeling, and people like it. By the way, I tried some lowcarb pizza crust mix, CarbSense, I think it was, and it was not too bad.But having only one or two pieces was hard, and it did raise the bg's about what you would expect from 12g carb, and I decided it was probably better to have those 12g of carb in spinach or broccoli or cauliflower. Yep...I think everyone in the US gets a little of that feeling after Thanksgiving dinner!

I am really enjoying the extra energy I have gotten from stabalizing my BG. I am only sleeping 6-7 hours per night and haven't felt better in years!!

Yes, I also got that euphoric, dopey "warm in the tummy" feeling every morning after I ate my everything bagel w/butter and cream cheese. I doubt, however, that it's quite so "not unpleasant" to lose a kidney, or a foot or your eyesight. So, I miss pizza less and less all the time.

I don't consume any other products made from grains either. I haven't had a cold or the flu or for that matter even a headache since I stopped doing so. That's about two years now. I think the really bad part of pizza is the crust because it's made from wheat flour. It's even worse for you than the sugar.
