Default Low-carbing may repair the brain

Quote:
Summary: Neural stem cells, which create new neurons in the brain, become less active with age due to elevated glucose levels. Researchers found that by knocking out the glucose transporter gene GLUT4 in older mice, they could significantly increase the production of new neurons.

This discovery opens up potential pathways for both genetic and behavioral interventions to stimulate brain repair, including the possibility of a low-carbohydrate diet. The findings could help treat neurodegenerative diseases and aid in brain recovery after injury.

I don't think I'd be as good as I am without Atkins, Keto, etc.

Add genetic diabetes risk and all that comes with it, and I would be a heckuva lot worse off.

This little bit was buried way down at the bottom of the article.

Quote:
Glucose uptake increases in NSCs during ageing, and transient glucose starvation restores the ability of old NSCs to activate. Thus, an increase in glucose uptake may contribute to the decline in NSC activation with age.

I didn't notice anything in the article about whether the currently acceptable blood glucose levels are low enough to cut glucose to the NSC's, or if even those are to high.

I feel certain that despite the first few sentences pointing to a LC diet as a potential way to allow the old NSCs to activate... but the way this usually works is that most of the research will go towards new drugs to lower the glucose uptake... because you can't expect people to give up their carbs.

It's no wonder at all that the elderly in nursing homes decline so quickly - they're being fed a "healthy" primarily carb based diet - their NSC's must be swimming in glucose.
