I'm not that hopeful, either. Gary Taubes book (I'm stuck in the 1920's!) about the animal diet for diabetes indicates that, even with death on the doorstep, some people could not manage to stay away from cake, cookies, and bread.
But this was also at a time when such foods were starting to flood the zone.
